Nick’s Senior Portrait Session

There’s something timeless about portraits in natural settings—especially when Mother Nature decides to show up with soft, dreamy light. That’s exactly what we got for Nick’s senior portrait session in Port Washington, WI – a perfectly overcast day, which gave us great diffused light. No harsh shadows, no squinting—just clean, flattering light that made every image pop!

The Beauty of Overcast Skies

A common misconception is that sunny days make for the best photos. Golden sunlight is beautiful, without question. However, ask any photographer and they’ll tell you: overcast skies are gold and can be just as stunning! The diffused light acts like a giant soft box in the sky, eliminating harsh shadows and giving skin tones a smooth, natural look. It’s especially great for anyone who wants a more understated, natural vibe to their senior pictures. Of course, the glowy light of golden hour will always be gorgeous, but overcast skies can also truly deliver!

Natural Perfection

When Nick told me that he wanted his senior portraits to be taken in a natural wooded setting, I knew exactly where to begin. We kicked things off at Sauk Creek Nature Preserve, one of my favorite locations in the area for senior portraits. The foot bridge there made for a strong, rugged backdrop—the perfect starting place for Nick’s session. The tones of the wood mixed with the surrounding greenery created an awesome natural vibe.

We then made our way down the gravel path for some additional portraits surrounded by forest and long grasses. After that and just a few steps from the bridge, we made our way down the stairs to the creek. The natural elements really brought out the best in our session. Water reflections, mossy rocks, and those soft overcast skies worked together to give each photo a polished feel. This part of the session was all about movement and nature—perfect for a guy who loves the outdoors or just wants something that feels authentic and grounded.

We then made our way to the waterfall. To say this was gorgeous natural beauty is an understatement. In fact, Nick mentioned that one of the portraits captured in this spot is the one that he wants to frame and put on the wall, which is always my goal as a photographer!

Historic Local Charm

From there, we headed over to Lime Kiln Park, which added a whole new layer of texture and character to the session. The historic lime kilns are always a standout—those rustic, stone walls make a bold statement without overshadowing the senior, adding a great touch with to any image.

We wrapped up the session on the bridge there, which offered a clean architectural element that contrasted nicely with the natural stone of the kilns. The overcast sky continued to deliver, casting an even glow across the entire scene. Also, did I mention that belt buckle??
